It’s now widely accepted that red wine is good for you. Red wine drinkers generally live longer and are less susceptible to heart disease, dementia and diabetes than people who don’t regularly drink a glass daily. For example, France has a low level of heart disease despite the high consumption of saturated fat in their diet.
As further proof, new research in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health has shown that drinking up to half a glass of wine a day may boost your life expectancy by an extra 5 years.
The study was based on a 40 year study of 1373 randomly selected men at age 50. At the end of the 40 year study, 1130 of the men had died. Over half of those who died had died from cardiovascular disease.
The researchers discovered that on average men who drank less than half a glass of wine a day lived 2.5 years longer than those who drank other forms of alcohol (e.g. spirits and beer), and 5 years longer than those who did not drink alcohol at all.
So moderate daily wine consumption has a major effect on living a long and healthy life and this is irrespective of economic status and a bad dietary lifestyle.
Past research suggests that the procyanidins contained in the skins and seeds of the grapes is what enables wine to provide these spectacular health benefits. Procyanidins are produced by plants in their skins and seeds for protection, but procyanidins also have amazing anti-oxidant effects on our circulatory system.
A useful book with comprehensive research on which red wines are the best for you is “The Wine Diet” by Roger Corder. Roger is professor of experimental therapeutics at the William Harvey Research Institute in London.
TIP As a general rule Cabernet Sauvignon wines contain higher levels of procyanidins.
If you cannot drink alcohol for whatever reason Roger recommends some other foods that also contain high levels of procyanidins:
- Apples (eat the skins)
- Cranberries
- Chocolate (unsweetened cocoa powder)
- Cinnamon powder
- Raspberries
- Walnuts
We at exited by life have decided to put this experiment to test. We will volunteer to drink 1/2 a glass of wine at least once a week for the rest of our lives. Come and check back to see if we are still here in 50 years!
