A common complaint for a lot of us is “I don’t know how to find my passion in life”. However, if we look at passion closely we soon realize that it is just an emotional state. Sure it gives us the desire and motivation to act, but when you scratch the surface it’s just a temporary emotion. In the end passion will never guarantee success.
What we typically mean when we say “find my passion” is really “find my purpose”, or “What are my strengths and talents?”. Those areas where we can achieve our own unique mastery. Skills and gifts that will in turn provide extraordinary value for others – to the extent that our skills will be in such high demand that others will seek us out.
In the previous post, we talked about flow-state and being in the zone. This is true passion in action, and can only be achieved with mastery of a discipline that results from long term consistent daily practice..
So where to start? First, connect with nature by finding a quiet place of contemplation to “hear your calling”. Start to look at what you are already good at. List all the areas out. Then go back to the list and cross out all the things you don’t like doing. Next add things that you have always been interested in doing but never got around to try.
TIP
The skills you select should be ones that are not dependent on technology or that have the possibility to become obsolete in the future.
Now get going. Pick the top interest on your list and start blogging about it. Register a free blog at wordpress or blogger and get started. Forcing yourself to write regularly about your passion will help you determine if it really is your unique calling – can you be a master at it and teach it to others?

Thank you for this post. I recently found myself embarking on my own journey to discover my purpose, or passion in life. Connecting with yourself again is one of the most important steps to your own discovery. The biggest advice I can give is to have patience. This doesn’t happen overnight. You may be feeling very anxious about your current career, and are ready to take the first leap you can, but take the time to really understand who you are, and what you truly have a desire to do.
The other bit of advice that is really important is not to get discouraged by others. Not everyone is going to understand what your doing. People act like they know what’s better for your life, but only you do. Follow your own heart, surround yourself by supportive people, and press on.
Thanks again,
Kevin P.
