Methane On Mars – Life ?

Some very exciting news came out of NASA last week with the discovery of methane gas vents on mars.  NASA were quick to point out that it could be geothermal in nature and not biologically generated.  But it does open up the possibility of some form of life on mars.

Michael Mumma and his NASA team discovered the methane spewing from discrete vents.  It only occurs during certain mars seasons.  In later seasons they see no methane, which is why it was only recently discovered.  What is the possible origin ?  Biologically it could be microbe activity producing methane as a bi-product. However it could also be geochemical i.e. Carbon dioxide can combine with water under very high temperatures to produce methane.
The next goal of NASA will be to go to these discrete locations to determine if biology (life) is at work or if it is just geochemical activity.
