A study in India was recently completed in which an 82-year-old Indian sadhu named Prahlad Jani (affectionately known as Mataji) lived for 15 days straight without food or water. An average human can only survive 4 days at most without water!
Even more amazingly, Prahlad claims to have not drunk water or eaten food since the early years of World War II.
‘I can’t recall exactly what it was, it was such a long time ago.’ said Prahlad
You might think Prahlad needs to hibernate to achieve these feats, but in fact he walks up to 200 km in the jungle, never sweating, feeling tired or needing to sleep.
He has meditated all his life, from three up too several months straight. At this point I hear a chorus of the words “nonsense” and previous studies do appear to be biased, but not this latest study.
In this latest study researchers from India’s Defense Research and Development Organization got involved for defense reasons. They want their soldiers to be able to survive in harsh terrains without food or water for extended periods. On April 22nd 2010, Mr Jani went on 15 days of tests at the end of which the researchers concluded that Mr Jani had apparently been living on thin air for the duration of his fast. The holy man emerged more healthy than men half his age!
During the 15 days a whole range of tests were conducted on Mr Jani which the doctors and scientists are yet to analyze. We will keep you posted on the results of the research.
This whole case is yet another example of the amazing benefits of long term meditation.
