Olive Oil May Help Ulcerative Colitis

I have suffered from a disease called Ulcerative Colitis for over 23 years. It is a very inconvenient disease characterized by inflammation of the large intestine. Symptoms include passing blood, severe abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Up until now the best method I have found to control Ulcerative Colitis is to exercise at least 3 times a week, but a new study shows that olive oil may also be an effective guard against this disease.  This is very encouraging news not to mention that I have already incorporated olive oil into my diet and my experience so far has backed up the findings.

The study was carried out by researchers at the University of East Anglia (UAE). Over 25,000 people aged 40-65 were studied over a number of years. At the beginning of the study none of the subjects had ulcerative colitis but by the end of the longitudinal study a number of subjects did develop the disease. Based on a detailed analysis of the participants diets by trained nutritionists at Cambridge they found that the people who had the highest intake of olive oil in their diet had a 90% lower risk of developing the disease.

"Oleic acid seems to help prevent the development of ulcerative colitis by blocking chemicals in the bowel that aggravate the inflammation found in this illness… We estimate that around half of the cases of ulcerative colitis could be prevented if larger amounts of oleic acid were consumed. Two-to-three tablespoons of olive oil per day would have a protective effect," said Dr Hart.

The study is not definitive but similar studies are now being carried out in other countries to test the results. This is really encouraging news for sufferers of this debilitating disease.
