Binge Drinking, Does it Really Impress ? There is a study from the American Psychological Association that indicates that most college women drink excessively as an attempt to impress men. Young women take note! The study finds that men are in fact not impressed with women who drink excessively.
Binge drinking is a huge problem in Australia and Great Britain where most families (mine included) grow up with one or both parents being heavy drinkers. It’s almost cultural in Australia. Unfortunately the tough economic conditions may lead to an increase in binge drinking with an increased desire for escapism and indulgence.
I don’t want to be a complete teetotaler, as there are studies that consistently find that drinking (red wine in particular), especially in moderation is beneficial for health. But binge drinking can have disastrous consequences for you life; socially, physiologically and physically.
Some Problems Caused by Binge Drinking
- loss of employment through absenteeism
- vulnerability to physical assault and personal injury.
(WARNING: The pictures and details of this report may offend and are highly distressing but I must admit it would be a good intervention for a binge drinker to read). - increased risk of stroke
- high calorie content (of beer in particular) leading to obesity
- increased risk of stroke
- .. the list is too long to continue
Tips To Avoid Binge Drinking
You may be in a situation that could easily escalate into a binge drinking session. Here are some tips that might help:
- Avoid salty snacks that make you more thirsty.
- Get out on the dance floor, walk around and mingle. It’s too easy to drink too much if you just sit in one place.
- Make sure you eat before drinking. This fills you up and alcohol is not absorbed as quickly with food in your stomach.
- Have a non-alcoholic drink for the first drink and alternate alcoholic with non-alcoholic drinks
- Sip your drink. Make it last. Avoid shouting rounds of drinks but if you have to don’t feel guilty about wasting money by skipping when it’s other peoples turn to buy rounds.
- Set a definite time to leave the party and set an alarm on your phone to let you know, or better still get someone to call you at that time.
