Day 3 – Competititve Analysis

by admin on March 8, 2009

This is a continuation on my notes from the 30 day challenge.  Remember the challenge is free and well worth your time. I spent thousands on a lot of courses dealing with setting up an internet business over the years and the 30 day challenge is the best course I have seen.

In day 3 Ed and team show how to  gauge the competition you are up against in your chosen niche for each of your keyword phrases.

It is impossible to outrank high quality authority sites such as wikepedia, amazon, ebay and authority in the short and long term, so checking the amount and type of competition is necessary.

Market Samurai SEO Competition Module

Market Samurai has a SEO competition module. This tool looks at all the top websites competing for your keyword phrase and produces a color coded matrix to show how competitive the market is. There are a number of factors in the matrix.

RED – competitive
YELLOW – average competitive
GREEN – not competitive

Off Page Factors

DA – Domain age. Google gives some preference to older domains. If it does not have a DA listing then it is either very new or the owner is hiding the domain information.

ALX – how much traffic the whole website is getting. The lower the number the higher the traffic the website is getting.

PR – Google’s estimate of the authority of the domain.

BLP – Back Links pointing to the specific Page that is ranking
If websites have no back links pointing to the page ranking for the keyword phrase then you have a chance to rank higher.

BLD – Back Links to Domain
Some sites rank high because the domain has authority as a result of overall large number of back links going to it.

BLEG – back links from .edu and .gov domains. There is some evidence that back links from these domains have higher authority.

YAH – Owner is paying $300 a year to appear in the yahoo directory. Google considers that such owners are serious.

DMZ – Owner has links from Demoz directory

On Page Factors

If the page has been optimized for the keyword it would have all the following.
Title – does the keyword phrase appear in the title
URL – does it appear in the URL
Desc – does it appear in the description
Head – does it appear in the header

CA – google cache age. The lower the CA it means google is visiting the site more regularly.

SEO For Firefox

If you don’t have or can’t afford a tool such as Market Samurai, Ed shows how to use a plug in called SEO for Firefox to do much the same thing. It also works with the Flock browser. There is a specific lesson in pre-season on how to install flock and the add on  if you are new to all this.

The other add on that is a must have is google global .
