There are a number books that have really changed my life and helped me become more excited and happy about life. After reading the following books, I feel in the words of Issac Newton that we are all “Dwarfs standing on the shoulder’s of giants.” I hope these book recommendations help you as much as they have helped me. Enjoy!
1. ” Loving What Is”, by Byron Katie
Katie’s famous 4 questions (“The Work”) to challenge negative thoughts has probably helped our family the most in dealing with negative thought patterns. Byron speaks from experience. She went to hell and back for 10 years in her own mental suffering of depression, self-loathing and suicidal thoughts.
2. “Emotional Intelligence”, by Daniel Goleman
First published in 1995 this book remains the best introduction to Emotional Intelligence (or EQ). When I first read this book, I became aware of my own lack of EQ at the time. Thankfully this book set me on the path to being more self aware, and responsible for my own emotions, rather than blaming others.
3. “Think And Grow Rich”, by Napoleon Hill
So many people have “Think And Grow Rich” on their book shelves, but few have actually read it. If they did, they would find that most present day self-help and personal development work are mostly derived from this classic work. Read a chapter a day.
4. “A Gift To My Children – A Father’s Lessons for Life and Investing”, by Jim Rogers
Having two girls myself this book definitely has some good advice for children especially girls, and not just on investing. My favorite pieces of advice from the book are – “Boys will need you more than you’ll need them!” and “Dedicate yourself to what you feel passionate about”.
5. “Zero Limits”, by Dr Joe Vitale
I can’t say I agree with Dr Vitale’s marketing practices, but I can thank him for bringing Ho’oponopono to my attention, as modernized by the late Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona and now taught by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len.
Dr Len is famous for healing a ward of dangerously ill mental patients in a metnal institution, just by “cleaning” his own thoughts and memories. For me, it confirmed that the physical universe is an actualization of our thoughts, both conscious and subconscious. Ho’oponopono allows us to work on the subconscious thoughts as well as the conscious thoughts.
